Verdict unlikely to end Krishna water dispute

New Delhi: After 43 years, hundreds of hearings and the spending of over Rs 100 crores, the verdict on the Krishna River Water Dispute is out. One of the oldest and the biggest inter state river water disputes in India - sharing of the Krishna river water among Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh comes to an end - at least on paper.

The second Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal constituted by the Centre, distributed the water among all three riparian states in the Deccan plateau.
Andhra Pradesh has got the lion's share of 1001 TMC FT of water, Karnataka got the second highest 911 TMC FT and Maharashtra got 666 TMC FT of water in the river. The surplus water has also been distributed among all three states.

Srikrishna Committee submits report on Telangana


Justice B N Srikrishna has submitted his report on the separate Telangana state demand to Home Minister P Chidambaram.
After receiving the report Chidambaram said that the Srikrishna committee recommendations onTelangana 

will be discussed with the political parties and added that the report will be made public on January 6, 2011.
The two-volume report, prepared by the Committee after extensive discussions with political parties and other organisations in the state over the past 11 months. The Committee’s term was to expire on 31st December.

In the wake of New Year and submission of report by Srikrishna Committee, the people seek to know whether it will be a Paramilitary decision or Parliamentary decision. Justice B. N. Srikrishna, former Judge of Supreme Court, heading the Committee for Consultations on the situation in Andhra Pradesh has declared that his committee report would be ‘impartial and professional’ report. The Chairman claimed that report would seek to achieve the ‘highest satisfaction of the maximum number of people’. He also hoped that the report would seek to bring about a ‘permanent solution’ to the statehood demand.

Manmohan Singh presides over Cabinet review meeting on Telangana

New Delhi, Dec 29 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday, was presiding over an emergency meeting of the Union Cabinet to review the Telangana state issue and security in Andhra Pradesh ahead of the submission of the Srikrishna Committee report.
Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A.K Antony were among those attending the meeting.
